Obituary of Eric Adolphson

I am sorry to relay to you the sad news that our colleague and friend Eric
Adolphson passed away at the age of 42 years old on Thursday, 14 December
2000 in Peoria, Illinois (USA) from a sudden heart attack.

Eric has been a significant contributor to the field of Natural Language
Processing through his participation as Associate Linguist and Documentation
specialist in Controlled Language and Machine Translation on the Caterpillar
Technical English (CTE) project since 1994.

Eric was well-known for his in-depth knowledge of the automotive and heavy
machinery domains in addition to having a very solid grounding in
linguistics. Eric had this unique hybrid of skills from having had been an
automobile mechanic during his college and graduate school years as a student
of Linguistics. He held a Masters in Linguistics from the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was an All-But-Dissertation candidate for a PhD in
Linguistics at the same institution.

In addition to his expertise in Controlled Language and Machine Translation,
one of Eric's particular linguistic interests (notably for his graduate
studies) was in the local language of Fiji in the Pacific Ocean.

Anyone who knew Eric would certainly say that he can be remembered for his
sense of humor. He always knew how to liven up work and linguistic-related
topics with something witty and funny.

Funeral services were held at Wilson Mortuary on 16 December 2000 in Peoria.
Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association.

Eric is survived by his wife, mother, two brothers and a sister.
