Position available - KerMIT Project

XRCE Grenoble Laboratory is a world leader in natural language,
distributed systems, and knowledge management research. It forms an
integral part of Xerox's research culture with sister laboratories in
Cambridge (UK) and Palo Alto (PARC, California).

Currently, the centre is seeking a highly motivated and qualified
researcher to play a pivotal role in the area of multilingual and
multimedia document categorization as part of the KerMIT EU project.
KerMIT (Kernel Methods for Image and Text classification, clustering,
ranking and filtering) concerns the development of algorithms and
software for the classification, clustering, ranking and filtering, both

in an online and offline setting, of digital documents. In particular,
the focus of this project investigates the use of kernel methods
(support vector machines and others) in processing multilingual (French,

English, Czech, Hungarian, German) and multimedia documents
(text+images). The project partners include: Reuters Group Plc, Royal
Holloway and Bedford New College (University of London), Università
degli Studi di Milano, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and
Università di Genova.

Candidates for this position should be energetic, highly motivated and
will be expected to hold a PhD degree or have equivalent academic or
industrial experience in information retrieval and/or machine learning.
A good publication record in international conferences is desirable.
Candidates must have good computational skills (we currently use Java,
Perl and C/C++) and must either have a fundamental understanding of both

text and image processing or be willing to acquire these skills.
Proficiency in English is required and good communication skills are a
must.

XRCE offers excellent salaries and benefits (and relocation package),
excellent computing facilities and the opportunity to work in a leading
international research institute. The successful candidate will be
located in Grenoble (France), in the foothills of the Alps, providing
access to some of the best outdoors in the world (activities in this
region include: snowboarding, skiing, golfing, hiking, kayaking,
paragliding, rock climbing, fishing etc.). Please refer to the XRCE
webpages (http://www.xrce.xerox.com/) for further information regarding
this position and on our research centre.

The position is for a period of 18 months, possibly leading to a
permanent position and is available immediately.
