Dear Aleem,

The USAS tagger assigns a set of possible semantic tags more coarse-grained than word-senses, and then carries out disambiguation amongst that set given the context.

There is a free trial as part of Wmatrix. See

http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/ucrel/wmatrix/

Regards,
Paul.

are there any semantic taggers like this (i.e. that add assign categories
rather than performing wsd) which are freely available for research?

regards,
aleem
