The University of Amsterdam seeks a versatile, highly motivated
post-doc, PhD candidate, and research programmer to work on
vertical search engines for cultural heritage materials. The
positions are part of the MuSeUM project (Multiple-collection
Searching Using Metadata), in close collaboration with the
Gemeentemuseum The Hague where the researchers will spend 60% of
their time. MuSeUM is funded through the NWO/Catch program
(Continuous Access To Cultural Heritage).

Building a vertical search engine for cultural heritage requires
making sense of various legacy systems. There is a wealth of
highly heterogeneous metadata, e.g., due to different traditions
of description in archives, libraries, and museums. MuSeUM
investigates the combination of modern information retrieval
methods based on statistical language modeling with varying
amounts of metadata and non-content features.

The University of Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum The Hague
invite applications for three positions within the MuSeUM
project:

(1) Post-doctoral researcher (3 years).

The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in a relevant area, and have a
strong background or demonstrable interest in:
- Information Retrieval, especially user-centered IR.
- Test collection development.
Experience or affinity with cultural heritage and the traditional
means of search, discovery and retrieval based on controlled
vocabularies is a definite advantage.

(2) PhD position (4 years).

The PhD candidate should hold a research-oriented master's degree
(M.Sc./M.A.) or equivalent qualification, and have a strong
background or demonstrable interest in:
- Information Retrieval, especially statistical language modeling.
- Metadata and semi-structured data.
Solid programming skills are a requirement. Industrial
experience, or a track record of project-based work, is a
definite advantage.

(3) Research programmer (4 years).

As a research programmer, you will support the MuSeUM project in
the development and testing of innovative algorithms, consolidate
and develop software, and be responsible for ensuring that the
resulting implementations can actually be used within the project
for research and demonstration purposes. The requirements for
this position are:
- Relevant academic degree.
- 3+ years of experience in developing complex software systems
using languages such as C, C++ or Java, and scripting languages
such Python, Perl, Ruby, SQL or XML.
- At least one year of experience in developing technology for
information access.
- Knowledge of search engines (such as Lucene) and relational
database systems.
- Knowledge of web servers and web technologies such as CGI, PHP
and Java servlets.
- Familiarity with Linux and general Unix development and
maintenance.
