****** Announcing 1st KYOTO Workshop (Knowledge Yielding Ontologies for Transition-based Organization) ******

"Environmental Knowledge Transition and Exchange"
Artis Zoo, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
February 2-3, 2009

Kyoto is organizing an open workshop where the environment community
meets the language technology community in a historical place in
Amsterdam: the Artist Zoo, on February 2nd and 3rd 2009.

KYOTO is funded by the European Commission in the 7th FrameWork and by
local authorities in Taiwain and Japan and officially started March 1,
2008.

Information sharing and gathering is essential for environmental
communities that address global issues that cross culture and language
borders. Transition of widespread knowledge from one region to another
region can help us creating awareness and collaboration to address our
care for the environment. The KYOTO project is developing a system
that should help people organize their knowledge and information
across cultures and languages to support communication and
collaboration. The KYOTO system allows environmentalists to agree on
the meaning of their terms in a shared Wikipedia platform. Terms
become anchored across languages and cultures but also in such a way
that a computer can use them to detect knowledge and facts in
documents. For example, the notion of environmental footprint can be
defined in the same way in all these languages but also in such a way
that the computer knows what information is necessary to calculate a
footprint. With these definitions it will be possible to find
information on footprints in documents, websites and reports on a
massive scale so that users can directly ask the computer for actual
information in their environment.

The project has now completed its initial design phase and the first
prototypes are being released and tested. At this point, we would like
to invite you for a workshop that brings together two groups of
people:

- from environmental organizations, those who have an interest in
technological innovations and cross-lingual and cross-cultural
   collaboration;

- from the knowledge and language-technology engineering community,
those who have an interest in generic and domain-specific solutions
   within cross-lingual and cross-cultural settings.

coordinator Piek Vossen at p.vossen at let.vu.nl
