Vacancy for researcher in Natural Language Processing
Natural Language Processing Research Group, Sheffield University

This post offers the opportunity to work on the European Union (EU) funded projects PATHS, which is a collaboration between Sheffield University's Department of Computer Science and School of Information. The project will create a system that acts as an interactive tour guide through online Cultural Heritage collections. This system will provide users with personalised suggestions about items to look at and assistance in their interpretation.

The successful applicant will develop novel Natural Language Processing systems to interpret and augment Cultural Heritage information in digital libraries. They will make use of existing language processing systems or develop novel ones, as appropriate, and integrate them into the PATHS system in collaboration with project partners. 

Applicants should have a qualification in Natural Language Processing (or a related area) or be expected to complete one soon. Experience of any of the following areas is an advantage: Information Extraction (including Named Entity Recognition), ontology learning from text, automatic creation of hyperlinks, use of ontologies (including WordNet), Word Sense Disambiguation, Machine Learning, application of Natural Language Processing to Cultural Heritage data, Information Retrieval and Recommender Systems.

The post is available from the 1st of January 2011 (or as soon as possible thereafter) is are fixed term until 31st December 2013.
