Position available: Research Programmer @ Carnegie Mellon University-Qatar

A position for a research programmer is available at Carnegie Mellon University-Qatar (CMUQ) to support a project funded by Qatar National Research Fund.  The project, "Automatic Correction of Standard Arabic Text: Resource and System Development," will create a large corpus of manually corrected Arabic text. The corpus will be used to develop methods for automatic correction of Arabic text errors, e.g., spelling errors, grammar errors, lexical errors, etc.

We are looking for people with excellent Java/C++/C/C#/Python programming skills on Windows and/or Linux.  Experience with developing intuitive human-computer interfaces and/or machine learning a plus. Previous work in (Arabic) natural language processing a plus. Knowledge of Arabic is not a requirement although a plus. High productivity and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment are a must. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.  Ability to work from broad, general specifications to develop and implement solutions with minimal supervision; ability to think creatively and innovate. A B.S. or M.S. in computer science or a related field are required.

The position’s main duties are:
* Developing a human-computer interface to aid in the annotation effort of language errors
* Supporting the researchers in the development of software for automatic correction of Arabic text
* Supporting the collection of corpus materials and database management of annotations
* Preparing documentation and contributing to a variety of project publications including status reports to funding agencies, talks, scientific papers and conference presentations.
