in ERC (European Research Commission Advanced Grant) project POLCON: "Semi-automated Media Content Analysis"
 
The ERC research program POLCON will assess the contemporary development of European democracies and the politicization of the European integration process in the shadow of the Great Recession, which started with the breakdown of Lehman Brothers in Fall 2008 and is still ongoing. The project is situated at the European University Institute, in Florence, the sub-project "Semi-automated Media Content Analysis" at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. We are seeking a Ph.D. student for the sub-project "Semi-automated Media Content Analysis". The appointment will ideally begin in March 2014.
 
Project description:
The project will implement a semi-automated, computer-based approach to media content analysis, based on computational linguistics, both for the selection of media documents, the classification of content, and the extraction of relevant variables like actors and location from the texts. The project will use well-established methods for named-entity recognition and keyword detection, and combine them with political protest and election research. We will apply state-of-the-art text mining methods like relation detection and develop new approaches to detect interaction dynamics and chains of events.
 
Position profile:
You should hold an MA degree in computational linguistics or a related subject, preferably in combination with political or media science. You need to have good programming skills, a reasonable command of German and English, and a keen interest in Text Mining, Information Retrieval and Media Analysis as well as in collaborating in research teams.
 
Terms of employment:
The work location is at the University of Zurich. The selected PhD student will participate in the research activities at EUI (European University Institute) in Florence. The salary is determined according to the Swiss Doctoral Student pay scale (47.000-50.000 CHF/year). The position is limited to 4 years.
