I am a linguist who is a Professor in the English Department of a
comprehensive urban university (UNC-Charlotte). Because I am interested in
aspects of contact and language change over time, particularly at the
discourse level, I have been looking recently at asynchronous electronic
discourse and at auditor perceptions of oral narrative as signalling various
kinds of interaction and accommodation between narrator and auditors, both
proximal and non-proximal. I have a book out with Jeutonne Brewer
(Electronic Discourse, SUNY Press), an article forthcoming with Ralf Thiede,
in an anthology ed M. Warschauer and R. Kern, and am trying to finish up a
discussion on auditor perception.
