The School of Literary and Communication Studies within the Faculty of Arts in
partnership with the Edward Wilson Foundation is pleased to announce the
establishment of a new Chair in Journalism and Professional Communication at
Deakin University.

Deakin University is committed to the pursuit of learning, research and
scholarship in fundamental, applied and professional disciplines, to support
flexible life long professional education in a broad spectrum of disciplines.

The School of Literary and Communication Studies is an interdisciplinary
School, focussed on professional and cultural communication.  Professional
Communication involves the areas of Journalism, Public Relations and
Communication Studies; and Cultural Communication, the areas of Literary
Studies, Professional Writing and Linguistics.

The successful applicant will have a proven record of outstanding academic,
research and/or industry related leadership, publication and income
generation,
with a demonstrated capacity to develop research and industry related
potential
in staff.  You will have an international profile, a demonstrated
commitment to
excellence in scholarship and teaching in journalism and professional
communication.  You will be expected to initiate collaborative research,
teaching and industry partnerships in new technologies in particular.  You
will
also be expected to have significant industry/corporate connections.

The position is based at the Geelong campus, but cross-campus academic
leadership will also be expected.

The position is available from January 2000.

Salary Range:           Level E Academic        $91,967

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: The Edward Wilson Chair in Journalism and Professional
Communication

Classification:         Level E

Faculty/Division:               Arts

School:                 School of Literary and Communication Studies 
Responsible to: Dean, Faculty of Arts via Head, School of Literary and
Communication Studies 

1.      Position Purpose:

The appointee will be required to:

·       Provide outstanding academic and research leadership in journalism and
professional communication, with a particular focus on new technologies and
industry/corporate connections.

·       Commitment to teaching excellence and a contribution to the
development
and teaching, of relevant units within the professional communication
stream in
the School.

·       Develop collaborative and internationally competitive research grants
and/or industry partnerships or projects with relevant staff.

·       Make an outstanding contribution to the Faculty's research and
industry
partnerships profile, by generating significant income, by publishing, and by
successfully supervising higher-degree research students, and by establishing
new (and maintaining existing), industry connections.

·       Develop a strong cohort of postgraduate research students.

·       Generate non-DETYA income through developing innovative mid-career,
professional programs customised to student and client needs, and the
development of consultancy and other relevant work.

·       Be prepared to contribute to the work of the Corporate Citizenship
Research Unit.

2.      Qualifications/Experience:

Qualifications:

·       Significant industry/corporate experience is essential. 

·       A research higher degree, preferably a PhD, or its equivalent, in a
relevant disciplinary area will be considered desirable.

Experience and track record:

·       Outstanding record of internationally recognised publications, and
demonstrated success in attracting external competitive research and/or
industry related grants.

·       Proven record of outstanding research/industry leadership through
developing collaborative and internationally competitive projects.

·       Proven record of attracting and successfully supervising higher-degree
research students.

·       Proven record of development of courses and programs that are
responsive
to professional and industry needs.

·       Demonstrable commitment to teaching excellence.
3.      Skills/Knowledge:

·       Expertise in teaching, research and industry practices in
journalism and
professional communication, with a focus on new technologies and
industry/corporate connections.

·       An ability to motivate, lead and inspire teaching, research and
professionally related performance in colleagues.

·       An ability and commitment to undertake original research of an
international standard and to publish the results.

·       A capacity to attract funding for teaching programs, consultancy work,
research and industry partnerships.

·       An ability and commitment to develop and teach undergraduate and
postgraduate courses, and in particular to foster honours and postgraduate
studies. 

·       A capacity to attract and successfully supervise higher research
students.

·       Competence in strategic planning and efficient administration of
academic programs.

4.      Principal accountabilities:

·       To provide outstanding research and industry related leadership
through
developing collaborative and internationally competitive projects in
journalism
and professional communication, with a focus on new technologies and
industry/corporate connections.
 
·       To make an outstanding contribution to the Faculty's research and/or
industry partner profile, by generating income, by publishing, by successfully
supervising higher-degree research students and by establishing and
maintaining
industry partnerships.

·       To develop a strong cohort of postgraduate research students.

·       To successfully supervise research students in the Honours and
Postgraduate programs of the School.

·       To generate non-DETYA income through developing innovative mid-career,
professional programs customised to student and client needs, and other
relevant consultancy work.

·       To develop, and teach, in collaboration with colleagues, relevant
units
within the professional communication stream of the School.

·       To promote the teaching, research and industry related activities
of the
Faculty within the wider academic and professional communities, in Australia
and internationally.

·       To work cooperatively and productively as a member of a multi-campus
team and contribute to the professional and academic activities of the
Faculty.

·       To be prepared to contribute to the work of the Corporate Citizenship
Research Unit.

5.      Position Dimension:

This position will form an integral part of the existing teaching and research
team of the professional communication stream, at the Geelong campus. The
appointee will initiate collaborative research in journalism and professional
communication, with a particular focus on new technologies and
industry/corporate connections.  She/he will have a proven record of industry
connections and partnerships, publication and income generation, and of
attracting and successfully supervising higher degree research students; a
demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, and an established record of
developing courses and programs that are responsive to professional and
industry needs. There are no budgetary responsibilities attached to this
position.
6.      Organisational Relationship:

This position reports to the Head of School and interacts with academic and
administrative staff within the School and Faculty. It has a responsibility to
staff and students and must develop links with the community, particularly
educational institutions, professional bodies, government and industry.

7.      Typical Duties:

·       To teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

·       To develop collaborative projects, including applications for research
and industry funding in collaboration with other staff.

·       To contribute to the Faculty’s research and industry partner profile
through publication and generation of research/industry income.

·       To attract students to the Honours and postgraduate research programs
and provide successful supervision.

·       To generate non-DETYA income through developing innovative mid-career,
professional programs customised to student and client needs and appropriate
and other relevant consultancy work.

·       To promote the teaching, research and industry related activities
of the
Faculty within the wider academic and professional communities, in Australia
and internationally.

·       To carry out administrative duties as directed by the Dean or Head of
School.

·       To attend appropriate staff development courses as the need arises and
participate in the University's Performance Planning and Review Program.

·       To be prepared to contribute to the work of the Corporate Citizenship
Research Unit.

8.      Hours of Duty:

The position is full time.

9.      Location of Work:
The appointee will have an office at the Geelong campus but will be
required to
provide cross-campus academic leadership in the School overall. 
10.     Selection Criteria:

·       Significant industry/corporate experience and/or connections.

·       An outstanding record in academic, research and/or industry leadership
in journalism and professional communication, with a focus on new technologies
and industry/corporate connections.

·       An outstanding record of publication of an internationally recognised
standard. 

·       A record of outstanding success in attracting funding, especially in
collaborative research and industry partnerships.

·       A strong commitment and record of designing innovative projects that
lead to collaboration amongst colleagues.

·       A consistent and strong record of excellence in teaching at the
undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

·       Evidence of an entrepreneurial approach to the development and
promotion
of teaching programs that are customised to student and client needs.

·       Openness to innovation and creative approaches to the study of, and
teaching in, journalism and professional communication.

·       Evidence of broad organisational and administrative experience and
competence. 

·       An ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. 

·       Commitment to service to the University and the wider community and a
willingness to contribute to the administration of the Faculty of Arts and the
School of Literary and Communication Studies.

·       A high profile in professional and community associations.
