these might be a useful entry into one perspective on genre that has
been investigated and is still being researched. most of the
theoretical work takes labov's stuff on narrative as a starting
point, but goes way beyond that.
applications to pedagogical contexts are part and parcel of the
research, but has been applied to a variety of text 'types'.
