CFP: Literature, Language and National Consciousness (Nigeria)

Professor Theo Vincent, one of Africa’s most prominent academics, will soon retire from the Department of English,
University of Lagos where he has taught courses in African, English and American literature for more than three decades.
In his many years of scholarship, Professor Vincent has promoted excellence, integrity and finesse in the search for and
dispensation of knowledge in Nigeria, Africa and far beyond these frontiers to Europe and America. In his honour, the
Department of English of the University of Lagos will be organising a two-day conference that will look at the issues of
literature and language in relation to national consciousness.

    Gender and the Publishing Industry
    Orality in African Art and Literature
    African Senses of Time and Space
    Cross-Cultural Connections Between Language and Literature



The conference will take place at the University of Lagos Guest Houses Conference Centre, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos
State, Nigeria.



All contributions should be no longer than 20 pages, in 12-point Times New Roman font, typed double-spaced and should
specify the preferred sub-theme. They must utilize the MLA system of referencing, and be accompanied by an abstract of
about 250 words.  A five-line paragraph containing autobiographical information should be included. Papers can be sent
to vincentconference at yahoo.com on or before Tuesday, August 31, 2004. Please note that failure to adhere to these guidelines
could result in the non-inclusion of such papers in the book of proceedings that will emerge from the conference. All
