JVP wants Govt. to drop English as medium of Education

 

The JVP yesterday called upon the Government to rethink its decision to make English a medium of education in government schools. 

 

The party's newly formed Education Policy Planning Committee, referring to a results analysis, of the first batch of students who sat the GCE Ordinary Level examination in the English medium, said that the education authorities should not change the medium of instruction of school children from the mother tongue to a foreign language.

 

"A GCE O/Level results analysis of the first batch of students who switched from mother tongue to English from Grade seven shows that those who changed their medium of learning had performed badly in comparison to their colleagues who chose their mother tongue - Sinhala or Tamil. The Government, education policy planners, and parents must pay immediate attention to this situation," JVP MP Bimal Ratnayake on behalf of the Education Policy Planning Committee said.
