The LLSI program (housed in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy
and Leadership) features two areas of focus – (1) Applied Linguistics and
Language Education and (2) Literacy Education, which brings together
Reading Education and English Education. Program faculty include Peter A.
Afflerbach, Shenika Hankerson, Jeff MacSwan, Megan Madigan Peercy, Melinda
Martin-Beltrán, John O'Flahavan, Kellie Rolstad, Olivia Saracho, Wayne H.
Slater, and Jennifer D. Turner.



Faculty and student research interests in the Applied Linguistics and
Language Education (ALLE) area of focus include: critical and sociocultural
approaches to examine language in school contexts, bilingual/dual language
education, peer interaction, teacher development, multilingual/second
language teaching and teacher education, teacher collaboration,
codeswitching, translanguaging, language assessment policy, language
contact and multilingualism, language diversity, critical consciousness and
centering equity for culturally and linguistically diverse students.



Faculty and student research interests in the Literacy Education area of
focus include culturally responsive approaches to elementary reading
instruction, emergent literacy, family literacy, preparing teachers for
diversity, learning with text, literacy teaching and learning, new
literacies, reading assessment, reading comprehension strategies, stasis
theory, and vocabulary for literacy learning.



The PhD program provides competitive funding packages for all admitted
full-time students. . TLPL’s Division of Language, Literacy, and Social
Inquiry is home to the Multilingual Research Center, which seeks to create
an infrastructure for practice and research in the broader community.



Both the department and the College of Education are invested in
cultivating diverse, equitable, and inclusive work and learning
