Reminder of CfP:

Dear all,

We are very pleased to let you know that the 2022 Linguistics and Knowledge About Language in Education (LKALE) SIG meeting will be held at the University of Liverpool on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th of April 2022. We are planning a face-to-face event, although with the possibility of a change to an on-line SIG meeting if required.

The topic of this year’s meeting is Empowering students via knowledge of language variation and change (see the CFP below for further details about the theme, types of contribution and deadlines). We are delighted to announce that the following plenary speakers have confirmed their participation:

Debra Myhill (University of Exeter)

David Waugh (Durham University)

Empowering students via knowledge of language variation and change

This year’s LKALE SIG meeting explores how language variation and change can be used to empower students in the classroom across a range of educational contexts.

Modern linguistics sees the relationships between spoken and written language as well as standard language and language varieties as dynamic and changeable. An awareness of such flexibility is essential to promote a useful dialogue between creativity, appropriateness and convention in language. All of which is important to teachers in supporting learners to become confident and resourceful communicators.

This nuanced approach to Knowledge About Language (KAL) is, however, not always consistently reflected in current teaching, learning and assessment practices, where the focus on ‘correctness’ dominates. In turn, this narrows student skills-development, thus limiting their potential as resourceful and confident language users.

We invite researchers, teachers, and educators to reflect on these matters and propose posters, long (20 mins) or short (5-10 mins) practice- and research-based talks that engage with the following questions:

* How can knowledge about language variation and change be usefully deployed to empower students in the classroom context?

* What teaching and learning approaches can be used to develop students’ sensibility to linguistic appropriateness (as opposed to linguistic correctness)?

* How do teachers promote a balance of creativity, appropriateness and convention in language use?

Abstract submission is now open. Abstracts should be sent to vgdiaz at liv.ac.uk and Sally.Zacharias at glasgow.ac.uk. Please indicate whether your contribution is:

* a long (20 mins) paper (abstract length: 300 words max)

* a short (5-10 mins) paper (abstract length: 150 words max)

* a poster presentation (abstract length: 300 words max)

Deadline for submission of abstracts for all contribution types: 25th February 2022

Notification of acceptance: 10th March 2022

Best wishes,

The LKALE SIG Committee
