Call for papers on Minority Language Education

Papers are solicited for inclusion in a panel for the 7th International
Pragmatic Conference, Budapest 9-14 July 2000.

This panel will address linguistic and pedagogical issues associated
with efforts to promote and revitalize threatened minority language
through teaching those languages in school settings.  Papers are sought
that link issues of minority language policy and/or ideology with
empirical studies of educational practices in minority language
settings. Possible topics could include (but are not limited to): issues
of cultural authenticity in minority language classrooms; bilingual vs.
immersion methods; issues of standardization; integration of children
from outside the minority cultural group; standards of testing and
evaluation; patterns of codeswitching in the classroom (and other school
settings); student accommodation or resistance to school practices; the
construction and acceptance of neologisms (school register) in the
minority language; differential uses of minority vs. dominant languages
in classroom management; community involvement in minority language
schooling.
