the issue addressed in the letter is not how to teach a martian to understand
earthling language but how to teach fluent native speakers how to READ, a
talent which has been in dire straits for quite some time (correlating with
what, i will not say). i only wish the linguists of the commonwealth of
pennsylvania got their act together to do what the linguists of the
commonwealth of massachusetts have done.
