"whenever" for "when"

Matt and others,
My niece, who moved here to Missouri from California, was quite amused by the
use HERE of "whenever" for "when".  She was under the impression that it was a
Missouri thing, and she is only 21 herself and had never heard it before.  She
said that all her co-workers at the nursing home where she worked here used
it.  I doubt that they were all under 25 years of age.
