IGALA 8
June 5-7, 2014

Abstract Submission Deadline: November 30, 2013

With the theme Shifting Visions: Gender, Sexuality, Discourse and
Language, IGALA 8 2014 aims to bring together scholars from diverse
fields of knowledge as well as geographical regions who are interested
in broadening and deepening our understanding of the complex
relationships among gender, sexuality, discourse and language. In so
doing, we encourage new ways of signifying these concepts and their
interrelationships in the following thematic areas:

Education & Pedagogy; Culture & Literature; Career & Workplace;
Ethnicity & Religion; Race & Social Class; Multiculturalism; Politics &
Journalism; Media & Technology; Policy & Governance; Health & Wellness;
Age & Life Stages; Multilingualism

IGALA 8 invites submissions for presentations in oral or multimodal
formats including papers, posters, panels, round tables, and
performances that address all aspects of gender, sexuality, discourse
and language. Submissions will be accepted in French as well as English
and be incorporated into the appropriate language stream. For any

Sessions are scheduled for 30 minutes. Presentation time will be
planned to allow for discussion at each session. Participants may have
more than one submission, but no participant will be scheduled as a
presenter for more than two sessions.

***General Submission Guidelines***

Please submit your proposal electronically by November 30, 2013 via the
registration page at https://igala8.attendease.com/papers. You will need
the following information:

Abstract/ Proposal (250 words max.)


Even though English is the official language of IGALA 8, proposals in
French will also be accepted.
Your abstract should be written in the language in which you intend to
present your paper.

Abstracts will be blindly reviewed, so authors should not include their
names or otherwise reveal their identity anywhere in the body of the
abstract. There are appropriate fields on the conference website
submission page where all of the authors* names should be informed.

All authors must pay their conference registration fee by April 1, 2014
in order to have proposals included in the conference final program.

 
***Submission Guidelines for Panel Proposals***

Please use the online form for submission of panel proposals as
follows:

1. Panel organizer completes all submission fields and in the Bio
Statement field lists the names (only) of all the panelists. In the
Abstract field include the title and description of the panel.
2. Each individual panel member completes all the fields. In the
abstract field (250 word maximum), please include the common proposed
panel title before the individual abstract title: <Panel Title/Theme>,
<Presentation Title>, <Abstract>.

All registration prices include the IGALA 8 conference dinner, to
happen on June 6, 2014.

Countries: $245.00 CAD
 
Regular registration fee (in Canadian Dollars); Closing date: April 1,
2014
Note: This is the very final deadline for registration payment by
authors in order to have their proposals included in the conference
final program.

***Presentation Format Specific Submission Guidelines***

-Oral Presentations will be 20 minutes each, with an 8-minute
question-and-answer period. (This allows for two minutes for the change
in presenters etc.) Abstracts should not exceed 250 words. Authors may
submit one single-authored and one jointly-authored oral presentation
abstracts, or two jointly-authored oral presentation abstracts.

-Posters will be presented concurrent with presentations at the
conference. Posters are typically a good format for presentations where
visual display of tables, graphs, maps, etc. is particularly important.
Abstracts for posters should not exceed 250 words, excluding title. Note
that all posters presented at IGALA 8 will run for the Best IGALA 8
Poster Prize.

-Panel should be organized around a specific theme or topic. Each panel
should be composed of no more than three speakers in one 90 minute slot,
and allow at least 15 minutes for questions and general discussion. The
body of the panel proposal (abstract) should consist of: (1) a general
description of the panel not exceeding 150 words that highlights the
panel*s theme and importance; immediately followed by (2) a title and
a 250 word abstract for each of the presentations within the panel. In
the appropriate fields on the abstract submission page, names and
affiliation of all panel presenters must be listed. The first author on
the list will be understood as the panel organizer and is responsible
for writing the panel proposal and gathering abstracts from each
presenter.

-Round Tables should be organized around a specific theme or topic.
Each round table should be composed of no more than three speakers in
one 90 minute slot, and allow at least 15 minutes for questions and
general discussion. The body of the round table proposal (abstract)
should consist of: (1) a general description of the round table not
exceeding 150 words that highlights the round table*s theme and
importance; immediately followed by (2) a title and a 250 word abstract
for each of the presentations within the round table. In the appropriate
fields on the abstract submission page, names and affiliation of all
round table presenters must be listed. The first author on the list will
be understood as the round table organizer and is responsible for
writing the panel proposal and gathering abstracts from each presenter.

-Workshops should provide a forum for open discussion or exploration of
issues of interest to the conference themes. Workshops will be scheduled
into 90 minute slots in the regular program. Workshop proposals should
be no longer than 250 words.

- Alternative Presentations IGALA welcomes submissions for alternative
presentation formats such as videos, individual or group performances.
 

***Up-to-Date Membership***
In order to present a paper (including posters, panels, etc.) at IGALA
8 you must have a current IGALA membership (after having submitted a
paper and having it successfully accepted according to the guidelines of
the conference organizing committee).

Note that IGALA Membership includes a subscription to Gender and
Language Journal (Equinox).

Also note that an IGALA membership runs on a calendar year. In cases
were abstract submission and presentation fall in difference calendar
years, you will need to be a paid up member for the calendar year in
which the presentation falls. Deadline for joining /renewing IGALA
membership in order for abstract to appear on the IGALA 8 final program

***Call for Complete Papers for IGALA 8 Book of Proceedings***
The IGALA 8 Organizing Committee invites authors of accepted
submissions for IGALA 8 Conference (in any presentation format) to
submit complete papers for publication in the Book of Proceedings of
IGALA 8 which will be distributed to eligible participants during the
event (USB). Complete papers will be accepted until April 1st, 2014.

Note that the publication of papers is not mandatory.

 
BURSARIES AVAILABLE

IGALA INTERNATIONAL BURSARIES: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS 

The International Gender and Language Association (IGALA) is pleased to
be able to offer a limited number of bursaries for scholars attending
and presenting a paper or a poster at the IGALA 8 Conference at
Vancouver, Canada, June 5-7, 2014.
ELIGIBILITY:  Applicants MUST have their papers or posters accepted for
presentation at the conference, and should be in financial need.
SELECTION CRITERIA:  Bursaries will be determined on the basis of
financial need, merit of the abstract, and the applicant*s potential
benefit from attending. Preference will be given to students and junior
scholars and to participants who demonstrate creativity in meeting much
of the cost from other sources.
SUBMISSION PROCESS AND DOCUMENTS:  Please submit the following
documents (all in English) to the IGALA Bursaries Chair, Carmen Rosa
Caldas-Coulthard at <carmenrosacaldas at gmail.com>, with the email subject
header: *IGALA International Bursaries.*
1) A one-page letter stating the amount requested *in Canadian Dollars*
and a detailed budget (e.g., airfare, ground transportation, local
accommodation). Currency conversion site (suggested):

2) A short statement from an academic supervisor or head of department
explaining why the applicant would benefit from attending the
conference, and why the applicant*s institution and/or country of
residence is not able to provide funding to attend the conference.
3) A copy of the abstract (including title) accepted to be presented at
IGALA 8.
4) A declaration of whether the applicant has previously received an
IGALA award, and when awarded.
NOTE: Individuals who are not affiliated with an academic institution
at the time of application may submit a short statement explaining their
funding situation, and outlining how they would benefit from attending
the conference.
DEADLINE:  Applications for bursaries for IGALA 8 must be received by
31st January, 2014.
RESULTS:  A committee drawn from IGALA Executive/Advisory Board will
assess the applications and will notify successful applicants by 21st
February, 2014.

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS:
1) Successful applicants will only be eligible to receive the award if
they have joined or renewed their IGALA membership by the deadline of
1st April, 2014.
2) Successful applicants are required to submit all receipts to the
application committee upon attending the conference. Money will be
handed over at the conference only, not before.
