International Gender and Language Association (IGALA)
Call for Nominations for Advisory Council Posts

There are 6 Advisory Council member posts (3 year term) coming up for elections: 5 Ordinary members and 1 Graduate Student Representative member. Advisory Council elected members work closely with IGALA's Executive Council (together forming the IGALA Executive Committee) and attend committee meetings during IGALA conferences and electronically. They should represent as broad a geographical spectrum as possible (including non-English-dominant countries) and a range of gender, sexuality and language research areas and priorities.

1) Ordinary members usually take responsibility for an on-going key task or a combination of a key task and an event-specific task. Ordinary members may comprise faculty members as well as graduate students, as specified below).Tasks include:

  * designing and maintaining a new IGALA website (position open to faculty or student members)
  * moderating and running the GALA-List (position open to faculty or student members)
  * running an IGALA blog on teaching/research/activism matters (position open to faculty members)
  * promoting visibility on language, gender and sexuality research by collating and posting information on new books and resources on the website (position open to faculty members)
  * creating and supporting international and national networks by overseeing the organization of local/regional branches and events; and actively identifying related (inter)disciplinary networks (position open to faculty members)
  * event-specific tasks include: overseeing international bursary allocations for IGALA 9, and organizing the IGALA Book Prize. We especially also seek someone to help the Association with the NSF (National Science Foundation) grant application for US scholars attending IGALA 9. (These positions are open to faculty members)
  * helping with any other tasks decided by the Association

2) The Graduate Student Representative must be a current graduate student, and will be responsible for:

  * bringing issues to IGALA that are of concern and importance to graduate students
  * working with other IGALA members and the Executive Committee to make graduate students an active and visible presence within IGALA
  * in coordination with the conference organizers and other members of the IGALA executive committee and membership, developing one graduate student workshop at each IGALA conference on a topic or topics relevant to the professional and intellectual development of graduate students and junior academic faculty
  * organizing the IGALA 9 Graduate Student Essay Competition

Candidates for any of the above posts must be paid up IGALA members. They may be nominated by any IGALA Member, with the candidate's agreement. Candidates are also strongly encouraged to self-nominate.

Please do not reply to this message.

Nominations for candidates should be sent between 26 November and 26 December 2014 to Agnes Kang, IGALA Secretary (makang at LN.edu.hk), in the form of a short statement giving a brief biography and highlighting how they can contribute to any of the specific tasks listed above. Please ensure that your email has the subject header 'IGALA AC Nominations', and that you state clearly whether your nominations are for an Ordinary Member and/or a Graduate Student Representative.

Elections will commence at the beginning of 2015.
Information on IGALA (including the current committee members, and membership information) can be found at https://www.facebook.com/InternationalGenderandLanguageAssociationIGALA or via the Secretary. In addition to being able to be elected/ involved in the association's activities, being a member of IGALA includes a subscription to the Gender and Language journal, and allows you to submit abstracts and present at IGALA conferences. So we would encourage colleagues and graduate students to become members, if not already. A reminder that IGALA membership is by calendar year, and you will need to renew membership with Equinox in January 2015 (http://www.equinoxpub.com/journals/index.php/GL/membership).

For information, the next IGALA conference (IGALA 9) will take place in Hong Kong in May 2016. Information will be posted on GALA-L.

We look forward to your nominations and your support of IGALA.

Michelle Lazar
IGALA President
