(with apologies for multiple postings, and for those in and around the London area)

Dear all,

We are pleased to announce a series of three events at the end of this month on the theme “Gender and Sexuality in Context: Between the Local and the Global”, organised by the Linguistics department at QMUL. The events will consist of two seminars (on Tuesday 24 and Thursday 26 January) and a panel discussion (on Wednesday 25 January). Abstracts for the seminar talks and a flyer for the panel discussion are attached to this message. Further events details are below.

Tuesday 24th January
16.30-18.00 – Seminar – Geography 2.20 [building #26 on the campus map<http://www.qmul.ac.uk/docs/about/26065.pdf>]

  * Tommaso Milani (University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg) and Erez Levon (QMUL) will give a talk entitled “Sexing diversity: Linguistic landscapes of homonationalism” (abstract attached)

Wednesday 25th January
16.30-18.00 – Panel discussion, preceded by refreshments from 16.00 – ArtsOne Lecture Theatre [building #37 on the campus map<http://www.qmul.ac.uk/docs/about/26065.pdf>]

  * The panel discussion is entitled “Intersectionality: Southern/Northern Perspectives”, and will feature: Nira Yuval-Davis (UEL), Tommaso Milani, Shirley Tate (Leeds), and Quentin Williams (University of the Western Cape), (moderated by Erez Levon)
  * This panel discussion brings together scholars from sociology, critical race studies, linguistics and critical discourse analysis to discuss how the concept of intersectionality is articulated across different disciplines, and the challenges and opportunities presented by applying intersectionality theory in different geo-political contexts (and in particular the global South). The event will feature brief presentations from each of the panellists on how they use intersectionality in their own work, followed by a broader discussion of some of the issues involved in using intersectionality in both scholarly research and political activism
  * This event is free and open to the public, but for catering purposes please indicate your intention to attend by registering here<bit.ly/2iTG6p7>.

Thursday 26th January
16.30-18.00 – Seminar – Scape G.14 [building #64 on the campus map<http://www.qmul.ac.uk/docs/about/26065.pdf>]

  * Quentin Williams (University of the Western Cape) will give a talk entitled “Emceeing Toughness, Toughing up the Emcee: Language and Masculine Ideology in Freestyle Rap Performances” (abstract attached)

We hope you’ll be able to join us for this exciting line-up of events!

best,
Erez
