Warning! we have a German-Gothic false friend here. Remember that a
Gothic *gaists should probably mean "terror" or "frenzy", not
"spirit". So if we take it to be from *Anagaists it may mean
"over-terror" or something like that--or maybe it's from *Hanagaists
"the terror of chickens", who knows :)
