Ah.  That explains a bit to me.  I was thinking *gastaz as an a-stem.
*gastiz to '-gastes' makes mure sense.  I think I misremembered the runic
inscription as "HlewagastAZ," not "-gastIZ."

That was my one bit of doubt on the Greek quarter--it just doesn't seem
recognizably Greek, at least not as a personal name.  Though is there any
other evidence of Gothic (or any other Germanic) individuals sort of coining
new names for themselves in Greek?  (That's starting to sound a bit
stretched).
