Yes, you are right. "Island" is quite a possibility
for the second part of the name.

In Latin we can look at Austeravia, an island
name with Plinius, translated somewhat
like "island of the east". Old Nordic also 
austr = east, Old High German ostar.

To take Finland for instance we have
Ahvio, the name of a village near Ahviskoski,
a fast stream of the Kymmene River.
Ahvionsaari further north is a name of an
island in Saeminge, Savolax Province.

I think the argument is pretty strong.
