Erh???? {Ashkenaz} (written in Hebrew as {#-Sh-K-N-Z}) is an easy Hebrew
miscopying for {#-Sh-K-W-Z} = {Ashku:z} = the Scythians (a group of Iranian
steppe nomads): compare Assyrian etc names for the Scythians. {#} is the
glottal stop / aleph.
