7. Old High German and Scandinavian Forms
of the Name of the Province

The vowel o in Old High German Scon-aowe, dating
from about 800 (latinized as Sconia about 1075),
was probably influenced by the common place-
name Schoenau through popular etymology. With
Sconaowe and Sconia should be compared Wulfstan's
Scón-eg (about 875) in king Alfred's translation
of Orosius. In Denmark and Sweden, however, the
province is called Skanoe, Skani, Skane and
(after a had become aa, pronounced as o, about 1250
Skaane.
