Dirk was kind enough to direct listmembers to a
German project, "Nomen et gens". It seems as
if this project is a huge undertaking and can take
many years to complete.

After reading some material on the website I came
to the conclusion that an Alemannic pilot project
was to be undetaken. This is of course only natural
as this is the basic German ancient people.

For future work it seems the project "Nomen et gens" is looking at
Frankish, Bavarian, Gothic, Burgundian. Lombard, Saxonian and
Thuringian names as well as other smaller peoples, which are not
mentioned by name.

With this great corpus one can easily see how it would drag
on maybe for a decade.

An interesting aspect though is the prospect of having the following
type of names analysed by "Nomen and Gens" in relation to endings:

Ostrogotha, Weringoz (Gothic)
Ingildan, Halfdan (Danish)
Altswab, Adalswab, Erchanswab (Suebic)
Halbthuring, Altthuring (Thuringian)
Kerwentil, Auriwandal, Orwendil (Vandal)

Important is of course to point out that we
already have two important works where
information on a large number of personal
names can be found:

Maurits Schoenfeld's _Woerterbuch der altgermanischen
Personen- und Voelkernamen_ (1911), which is a
rather thin book and possibly somewhat outdated.

Then there is a much more detailed encyclopedia,
namely that of Hermann Reichert _Lexikon der
altgermanischen Namen_ (1987), which is a
renowned Austrian scholar, whose contributions
to ONN was always of high value.

An effective use of Schoenfeld and Reichert would
however demand a working knowledge of the
German language.

What to do?

Germanically
