Keth,

"Amalernas stamtavla boerjar med Gapt (eller Gaut),
en skandinavisk krigsgud." (ur Andreas Nordins oeversaettning
av Jordanes _Getica Om goternas ursprung och
bedrifter_ (1997). Ur kommentatren till Kap. 79.

The fact that Nordin agrees with Jacob Grimm, Germany's
greatest linguist through the ages, is a fine testimony
to the high quality of the 1997 Swedish edition with
commentary.

When was the latest Norwegian edition of _Getica_?

Gothically

I believe this was Jacob Grimm's opinion, who was born in 1785.
No, but seriously, do you know if any work has been done
on this question since Jacob Grimm?

(Grimm believed that "Gapt" was a corruption of the "Gaut"
of the Norsemen, and the "Geat" of the Anglo-Saxons)

The name in question is not "Gapt" in all the Mss.
