Keth,

Much speaks for the fact that Gapt is a corrupted
form for *Gaut (Gothic *Gauts nominative, Icelandic
Gautr). Gaut was not a god but a "half-god" (Ansis,
Gothic *anseis, Icelandic aesir). There cannot
be much doubt that he is identic with Odin, Gauts,
goeten in Swedish.

Also in the Icelandic literature Gautr is the
progenitor of the saga Goetic royal families,
both as Odin, the highest god of the Gauts,
Gauta-Tyr (Hakonarmal). Between Odin-Gautr
and Odin-the progenitor there is a likely
identity, in Scandinavia as among the Goths
according to Jordanes.

Gothic Gauts (Icelandic Gautr) is a "heros eponymos".
The god name has evolved from the people name
and most likely the Goths regarded themselves as
Goetar. It is the own view of the tribe/people
about their origin, which is expressed in the
name of the progenitor.

Gothically

Bertil

Gaut = (perhaps) connected to the verb "gjóta" = to pour;
       connection with river name?
