Hi Leonardo,

I am not the best person to answer this, but since it was me who
noticed the possible relationship between Gothic 'stads' and Bavarian
'stadl', both apparently meaning something like inn, hotel etc. I
shall venture a guess.

Swedish 'stad' or German 'Stadt' meaning city, town is apparently
related to words like German 'statt' staette' meaning simply place. I
suppose in this sense also the Gothic word 'stads' and the Bavarian
'stadl' may have originally simply refered to a place, i.e. a
'statt'/'staette'. But since the Gothic and Bavarian words seem to
refere to the same very specific type of place, I would think that
Bavarian has borrwed the word from Gothic or another East Germanic
language.

I am sure some of our linguists can provide a technically more
satisfying explanation. There is also another Gothic word 'Haribergo',
German 'Herberge' which means inn or hostel and which was borrowed
from Gothic into German as far as I know.

cheers,

Dirk

cheers,
