Proceeding with my little series on Gothic Wars
it is now time for the Fourth Gothic War.

The Goths invade Moesia in a two-pronged attack.
In the west, under Ararich, fighting erupts with the
Romans under C.V. Trebonianus Gallus. The Goths are
held up at Oeskus. The main army under Kniva tries to
take Nicopolis by surprise. When a Roman army under
Decius aproaches Kniva retreats southward
and Decius fails to pursue. Later the Gothic army manages
to severly disrupt the Roman army in a surprise attack.
The road is open for the Goths to advance as far as
Thracia and Macedonia. Philippopel is taken with great
Roman losses. The Tribune Claudius defends Thermopylae
against a large Gothic army.

The Gothic army defeats a Roman army of many legions
at Silistria (251 AD). One of the emperors, Quintus
Messius Herennius Etruscus Decius is killed along
with his son.

A new emperor seeks peace with the Goths, which
saves the imperial border but the Romans have
to leave their prisoners in Gothic hands.
