I have to admit that I know next to nothing about finnish-ugrian 
languages. A very uneducated guess is that it might have something to 
do with valak or valakians a people who lived in present day 
Roumania. But it´s very hard to tell since finnish and estonian often 
have their own names on countrys and people, unlike those of the 
majority of europe. Russians are called as far as I remember 
venäläiset. Sweden is called ruotsi(rootsi), Germany is called Saksaa.
These and other names often have a very old history.
