Dear listmembers,

Canadian Professor J.B. Rives in his 1999 commentary
on Tacitus further points to the importance of Ptolemy
when it comes to the Roman knowledge of northern
Europe through trade. This can most clearly be seen
in the geography of the great astronomer and mathe-
matician Ptolemy. His work _Geographia_ consisted of
eight books with six of them containing geographical
data, mostly lists of places with locations assigned
according to his system of longitude and latitude. Much of
Ptolemy's detailed information must have come from merchants.
