Professor Birger Nerman (1888 - 1971) was one of Sweden's
leading archaelogists and a supporter of the freedom struggle
of the Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians. He for a while he
led the main Swedish support organization, Baltiska
kommitten, after WWII.

He was professor at the university of Tartu 1923-25 and director
of the Swedish National Historical Museum 1938 - 1954. He had two
brothers, Ture Nerman, a socialist internationally known for having been
supportive of Vladimir Lenin during his visit to Stockholm
before going to Russia in the wake of the coup d'etat in
St. Petersburg. T.N. later abandoned these sympathies.
Another brother was Einar Nerman, a leading Swedish painter.
Professor Nerman was known for his attempts to combine linguistic,
archaelogical and historic sources (a matrix well suited for the study of the
Goths, of which he wrote much). His speciality was the
Gotland Iron Age _Die aeltere Eisenzeit Gotlands (1923 with
Oscar Almgren). Other booktitles mentioned in the Swedish National
Encyclopedia (the latest large encyclopedia in 20 volumes
published in the 1990s) are

_Die Voelkerwanderungszeit Gotlands_ (1935)
_Die Vendelzeit Gotlands_ (1969)
