The Ostrogoths did not 'manage to free themselves'from the Huns. In
fact, the evidence suggestst that the Goths remained either passive
in the uprising of Gepids, Suevi, Eruli and others against the Huns,
led by Ardaric the Gepidic king, or actively supported the Huns. If I
remember correctly Ellak may have been the champion of the Goths.
This is set out in an article by Walter Pohl, the reference for which
I can supply later if desired.
