Tore,

some years ago I read an article called 'History of of Vendel period
archaeology. Observations on the relationship between written sources
and archaeological interpretations'. I cannot remember who the author
was, but I remember that Heruls or other East Germanic people had
absolutely no role to play in the emergence or development of the
Vendel period.

Of course, if there are no documentary sources historians have no
basis to illuminate the history of a period. In other words the
history is lost. However, I do not agree with your statement abourt
archaeology. Archaeological interpretations also tie in with history
and can be suggestive of historical events.

Why does it always have to be a migrating people that explains
changes?. Also, what would worry me is the lack of any East Germanic
material culture, burial practices etc in the Lake Maelar area or
anywhere else in Scandinavia. But this has nothing to do with the
Goths so we should not get into it again.
