Oskar,
This is a difficult question what decides if a immigrating culture 
takes upper hand or assimilates.

It is very difficult for a society to change without outside influences.
The easiest way is an immigrating group. We have it all the time.

We can see that the Gotlanders were the stronger why all immigrants 
adapted to Gotlandic language and probably culture.

If we accept the Herulis it means the a ruling class entered the 
scene and put its mark on society.

There is book I was very impressed by that deals with this matter 
changing societies and which I would recommend.
