Maybe the above statement should be interpreted as covering only the
period 492-527 AD.

I think the explanation is, that places like Gotland, Oeland,
Bornholm, Helgoe (in Lake Maelar) and Gudme (at Fyn) were trade
centers with workshops for the Southeastern Scandinavia. The golden
solidi may have been payment and rawmaterial for the workshops. The
same places have a high concentration of jewels, "Guldgubber" and
some dies are found here too.

I am sure my questions are in the best hands, and please take your
time to check the literature and the sources behind. A general
problem in these E-mail discussions is - without refering especially
to you - that it often is tempting to send a quick answer from the
book at hand rather than the right answer - causing a lot of needless
defence afterwards.
