Hi, Le,

According to most sources, there were three different sounds written
by Wulfla as "ai":
- in most cases the diphthong [ai] (pronounced like English "i"
in "mine", "wine", etc.). In modern transcriptions is sometimes
written "ái";
- the short, open [e] sound, which in genuine Gothic words occurs as
a phonetic variation of "i" before r, h, hw. In modern transcrptions
is sometimes written "aí";
- the long, open [e] sound, which appears only before vowels, like in
waian "to blow", saian "to sow".
There are indications that the diphthong "ai" became soon assimilated
to [ei] and then monophthongized to long [e] or even long [i] (in
Crimean Gothic).
The "iu" group is considered to be pronounced initially as a
diphthong [i-w], but in Crimean Gothic it became a sound noted by
Busbecq as "ie" (probably a long [i]).
There was no "ui" diphthong in Gothic.

Francisc
