Hi Francics,

yes, I suppose it should not be too surprising if Gothic/Gepidic
survived in these regions until about the 10th century or so. As I
said there are sources relating to the Bavarian missionary attempts
mentioning Gepids living at the middle Danube in the 9th century and
Gepids are mentioned as having joined Alamannic troops to fight the
Spanish Moslems at Poitiers. I think it is not unreasonable to assume
that these Gepids were still speaking East Germanic (i.e. Gothic). I
was really just curious about the exact source. Do you know which
work of Walahfrid Strabo referes to the use of Gothic. I think the
texts about the Bavarian mission state that Gepids were brought back
to Bavaria where some of them even became priests. It might be that
Walafried Strabo, who was at the monastry of Reichenau, heard about
the use of Gothic from one of these Gepids.

Cheers
Dirk
