The 1st Announcement
The Third International Conference on Chinese Pedagogy

June 25-27, 2002
Nanjing,  P.R. China
Introduction
Following the two successive successful international conferences on
Chinese pedagogy (Wuhan , 2000 and Yichang, 2001), Nanjing University and
New York University, as well as a group of supporting institutions, are
jointly initiating the Third International Conference on Chinese Pedagogy.
 The Conference will be held from June 25 to 27, 2002 in Nanjing, a modern
metropolitan city with historical importance in China .
	The ultimate goals of the Conference are to promote the education of
Chinese as a foreign language and to increase the communication channels
among Chinese language teaching professionals. Teachers of Chinese will
have excellent opportunities to meet colleagues in China and from other
parts of the world during the Conference. There will also be sightseeing
activities during and after the Conference.  The papers accepted and
presented at the Conference will be collected for formal publication.

The general themes of the conference are, but not limited to:
--Chinese language and culture programs from abroad conducted in China
	-Program and curriculum design
	-Language emersion and language pledge
	-Relations between content course and language course
	-How to make use of the language environment and culture resources
	-Teacher training
	-Relationship between study abroad courses and home institute curriculum
--Computer assisted Chinese language teaching
	-Computer technology in Chinese language curriculum
	-Chinese language courses using computer technology offered at different
schools
	-Internet and its role in language instruction
	-Language learning software and its application in language instruction
	-Teacher’s role in computer assisted Chinese language teaching
-Pros and cons of applying computer technology in language course, and
future development
--Teaching conversational Chinese
	-Goal of the course and curriculum design
-Teaching Pinyin, pronunciation and tones
-Teaching method and activities
-Real life situations and tasks in conversation training
-Available textbooks and their pros and cons
--Other pedagogical issues in teaching Chinese
	-Chinese character teaching
	-Chinese grammar teaching
	-Classical Chinese teaching
	-Writing training
	-Reading training
	-Middle school and elementary school Chinese classes
	-How to teach Chinese heritage learners
	-Special purpose Chinese

Workshops:
We will offer two half-day workshops (depending on number of attendees)
before conference. One is on “Internet and Chinese Instruction”, and the
other is on “Language Teaching Methodology”. Details about the workshop,
registration and charge will be announced in the next announcement.

Deadline for Attendee’s Information Form (see below): (As soon as
possible, but no later than the abstract deadline. You do not have to wait
to send the form till you make your final decision. Please send us the
form immediately when you have the intention to attend.)

Deadline for Abstract: December 15, 2001(The place where to submit your
abstract and other requirements will be notified in the next
announcement.)

Deadline for Research Paper: February 15, 2002 (This complete paper is for
publication. Please see the second conference notice for format and
requirement.)

Deadline for Conference fee: February 15, 2002 (The exact amount will be
announced in the 2nd notice.)
