The ISHL nominating committee expects to make a recommendation to the
Society by the end of April regarding the venue of the 23rd
International Conference on Historical Linguistics in 2017. Formally
this is done by nominating an individual from that institution as
President of the Society/Conference Director for 2017. Historical
linguists are therefore invited to consider whether they would like to
host the conference at their institution and submit nominations if they
are interested.

A formal proposal to host the conference requires a brief (one-page)
statement describing the suitability of the institution/city and the
proposed conference arrangements, and a formal letter of support from a
senior administrator at the University stating that the institution is
happy to host the conference (a financial guarantee is not required).
Formal proposals should be sent to myself as Chair of the Nominating
Committee, copied to JC Smith <johncharles.smith at stcatz.ox.ac.uk> as
Secretary of the Society by the end of March. We have received several
expressions of interest to date; any institution that has not yet made
us aware of its intention to bid should establish informal contact
before then.

Since the 2013 conference will be in Oslo, and the 2015 conference in
Naples, the committee has expressed the wish to hold the 2017 conference
outside of Europe. Previous and forthcoming venues this century are
listed below:

2001 Melbourne, Vic. (XV) (Barry Blake)
      2003 Copenhagen (XVI) (Lene Schøsler)
2005 Madison, Wisc. (XVII) (Thomas Cravens & Joseph Salmons)
2007 Montréal, Qué. (XVIII) (Fernande Dupuis)
2009 Nijmegen (XIX) (Ans van Kemenade)
      2011 Osaka (XX) (Ritsuko Kikusawa)
2013 Oslo (XXI) (Dag Trygve Truslew Haug)
      2015 Naples (XXII) (Michela Cennamo)

Best wishes

David Willis (Chair of the NominatingCommittee, International Society
for Historical Linguistics)
