Origin of nominalising morphology

Just throwing in a fuzzily thought out note. Might the appearance of an
array of different nominalization patterns have something to do with
different ways of laying out non-main clauses, for instance more
hierarchically versus serially organized, and the nature of their relations
with the main clause?
