It's really NTG, but I think that cleaner ways of doing that than
other people suggested may be:

- use \textasciitilde{} -- that doesn't require any special packages,
  I think,
- enclose the whole URL in \url{}, e.g.:
  \url{www.xxx.ie/~spollend/spollend}; that gives you additional
  benefits of handling the underscore, breaking long addresses, etc.
  Requires \usepakackage{url}.
