Preserving the spoken word focus of linguistics project

University of Georgia English professor William Kretzschmar suspects there's
been some sort of English influence in Winder.

He's heard people from the Barrow County town use the British word "boot" for
what most Americans call the "trunk" of their car.

It's the kind of inexplicable linguistic quirk that Kretzschmar runs across
frequently in his work.

Kretzschmar is director of the Linguistic Atlas Project, which is really a
series of studies dating back to the 1930s on how Americans use everyday
language.
