Maoris find their voice again

WELLINGTON // New Zealand’s Maori are celebrating the continued resurgence of
their language and are calling for more public money to help children of all
backgrounds learn an ancient part of the country’s indigenous heritage.

The language, known as te reo, almost did not survive the onslaught of British
colonisation and was banned in New Zealand’s schools until the 1960s, when a
new generation of politically active leaders began to emerge.
