NT indigenous elder is Senior Australian

Northern Territory indigenous elder Laurie Baymarrwangga has been
named the 2012 Senior Australian of the Year for protecting her
culture and country.

The 95-year-old from the island of Murrungga, north-east of Arnhem
Land, was recognised on Wednesday for her commitment to preserving her
beloved Crocodile Islands and teaching younger generations about their
heritage.

She spearheaded projects to pass on local ecological knowledge between
generations.
