decoding difficulty

I need to determine which word in a pair of words is easier to decode.
Does anyone know of an objective method for making this
determination? I have done a number of literature searches and the
closest I have come is the pronounciability ratings of Underwood and
Schulz (1960) and Hayden and Loud (1969). These are somewhat
helpful, but they only consist of nonsense syllables and it is difficult to
make their findings map on to real words. I would really appreciate any
help.
