While many of the recently references cited on SLI are appropriate, at least
two have new forms:
Kaderavek, J. N. and E. Sulzby (1999). Issues in Emergent Literacy for
Children with Language Impairments, National Inst. on Early Childhood
Development and Education (ED/OERI), Washington, DC A related article has
just been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing
Research, 2000, 43, 34-49.
Kamhi, A. and H. Catts, Eds. (1989). Reading disabilities: A developmental
perspective. San Diego, CA, College-Hill. There is a new 1999 text, which is
much more comprehensive: Catts, H. W. & Kamhi, A.G. (Eds.) (1999). Language
and reading disabilities. Needham Heights, MA; Allyn & Bacon.
In addition, see:
Catts, H. W., Fey, M. E., Zhang, X., & Tomblin, J. B. (1999). Language basis
of reading and reading disabilities: Evidence from a longitudinal
investigation. Scientific Studies of Reading, 3, 331-361.
The work of Mabel Rice and colleagues at the University of Kansas on SLI
has been published extensively. There appears now to be sufficient evidence
for a clinical distinction between specific language impairment (SLI) and
language impairment (LI).
I would also add that two journals are extensive resources for research on
both SLI and LI, including relationships to literacy learning and
bilingual/dialect issues:
Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.
Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools.
