Yes indeed 'dominance' and 'preference' are concepts that first need (and
often defy) definition. See for an excellent general discussion also Suzanne
Romaine's 1995 book on bilingualism. With regard to bilingual children there
is the added problem of distinguishing between 'proficiency' and 'dominance'
(see my article 'By way on introduction' in the issue on Bilingual
Acquisition of the Int'l J. of Bilingualism, 1998, Volume 2, No. 3).
